My top 10 biggest problems in the world in no particular order are hunger, homelessness, wealth gap, injustices in the justice system, global warming, pollution, sex trafficking, terrorism, economic situation, and war.
The first problem I mentioned was the hunger issue in the world. Almost 9 million children younger than the age of 5 will die from hunger this year. They don't necessarily die from starvation but they die from symptoms of chronic hunger, such as diarrhea, measles, and malaria. The majority of people who are undernourished live well below the poverty line and struggle to get the proper amount of calories in their diet to survive. A couple of solutions to help solve the hunger problem in the world would be to donate to organizations who's main focus is helping those in need of food. Also, teaching people who are chronically hungry how to produce their own food through gardening and farming if possible.
The second problem I mentioned was homelessness in the world. The United Nations Commission on Human Rights estimates that there are over 100 million people homeless in the world. Homelessness is a large problem here in America as well, with 6 of the top 15 homeless population cities here in the United States. A solution to help homelessness is to open more homeless shelters or government assisted housing.
The wealth gap between the rich people in the world and the poor people in the world is large and continuing to grow. The top 1% of the wealthiest people in the world hold more wealth than the rest of the world's population. This is a problem because it is likely that this disparity will restrict global economic growth. A way to combat this problem would to have higher taxes on the richest people instead of so many tax breaks for them.
Injustices in the justice system are a large problem and especially in the US. Recently, police officers have done awful things to citizens on camera and then the police officers are not held accountable for their actions. This is a problem because police officers can get away with things that the regular citizen can not. A solution to this problem would be to hold police officers and members of the justice system to a higher standard since they are asked to uphold the law.
Global warming is a huge problem in the world. Global warming is a problem because the Earth's temperature is continuing to get warmer due to all the carbon dioxide that is being let off from the burning of fossil fuels and the major deforestation, as the Earth gets warmer the ice caps and glaciers melt and has the potential to change weather patterns. Solutions for global warming could be driving more fuel efficient cars or hybrids, using solar or wind powered electricity, and planting more trees to help combat the carbon dioxide.
Pollution is a very big problem in the world. Recently, water pollution has been a large problem here in the US and in other countries in the world, like Brazil. In Flint, Michigan the pollution in the city's water is very prevalent. In Brazil, the water has human waste in it and is causing people to get sick who get in the water for water sports. The 2016 Summer Olympics are being held in Brazil so water sport teams around the world have practiced in the water and gotten sick. A solution to help combat water pollution and pollution in general is to have stricter laws on what can go into the waters and harsher penalties for people who pollute the Earth.
Sex trafficking is a big problem in the world. Almost 21 million adults and children are bought and sold into commercial sex servitude. They are forced to perform acts that they wouldn't perform willingly. Human sex trafficking is a huge violation of human rights. Solutions for ending sex trafficking are holding the buyers more accountable, eliminating gender discriminatory laws, and make it easier for women to have easier access to housing, jobs, and land.
Whether it be domestic terrorism or foreign terrorism, terrorism is a large problem in the world. The most notable terrorist group today is ISIS. They have committed terrorist acts in multiple countries in the world, including France, Iraq, and US. Terrorism is a problem because it puts fear into innocent citizens. A solution to end terrorism is to continue the fight we are already involved in and to cut off the funding that these terrorist groups receive.
The economic situation in the world is a large problem in the world. Many countries in the world are in the middle of an economic hardship. The country in one of the worst positions is Greece. Many countries are borrowing too much money from other countries and are unable to pay their debts. To fix the poor global economic situation country economies need to build and renew the physical and intangible capital that fuels productivity growth and innovation.
The final problem I stated was the problem in war or violent conflicts throughout the world. There are many wars and violent conflicts going on throughout the world, the US has a hand involved in many of them. The problem with war is many innocent people are killed by accident or on purpose. A way to reduce the war and violent conflict is for countries, like the US, that are in other countries fighting to bring their troops back to their country.

Hey Easton,
ReplyDeleteYou definitely listed some very serious world issues that we are currently facing. In my post, I also mentioned hunger, world pollution, global warming, and the economic situation. This assignment was very thought provoking for me and it appears that it was to you as well. I particularly liked the points you made about homelessness and water pollution. Even though the water in Brazil has gotten some people very sick, it is a wonderful thing that the Olympics are going to be held there because it will force Brazil to be very proactive in purifying their water and enforcing stricter laws on pollution, improving overall living conditions in Brazil for the long run.
If you would like to check out my opinion on the world's biggest problems as well, here is the link to my post: http://marissaent3003.blogspot.com/2016/01/what-i-believe-to-be-worlds-biggest.html
Hope you're having a great semester!

Hi Easton,
ReplyDeleteI think teaching proper farming practices are very important, in my post I mentioned that in order to eliminate dietary problems you must provide more resources and that would be a great resource. Even though I did not include sex trafficking in my list I agree that it is a huge issue and when ways to solve it are implemented it is not always successful as a lot of victim blaming occurs when those being prostituted often times get longer jail time than those forcing them to do such acts.
